☆ Munich and Beer = Oktoberfest ☆

☆ Munich and Beer - Just Flow Together ☆

Since time immemorial brewing beer has been considered a typically Bavarian craft..

Bavarian beer is synonymous with barley, hops, malt and water, the only admissible ingredients according to the Purity Law passed by Duke Albrecht IV in 1487, the world’s oldest food law; Munich breweries have strictly adhered to it to the present day..

The most famous brewery is the Hofbräuhaus, founded in 1589..

The oldest brewery is Augustiner dating back to 1328. Hacker-Pschorr, Löwenbräu, Paulaner and Spaten are the other major breweries of long-standing tradition..

Together they produce more than 6 million hectoliters (158.5 million gallons) of “barley juice” per year..

Beer is exported all over the world, but fortunately our breweries produce so much that enough is left for the people of Munich..

Of course our guests are also cordially invited to enjoy a foaming stein, for example during a proper “Bavarian Evening” in one of the traditional brewery halls..

Congresses do not have to be a “dry matter” after all..

Munich is also world famous for the largest festival in the world – the annual 16-day Oktoberfest – actually held mostly in September and ending the first Sunday in October..

☆ Munich and Beer - Just Flow Together ☆

It all started as a celebration of the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxony- Hildburghausen in 1810..

A commemorative medal from the time, above, shows the pair. But the celebration soon became an annual event and is now a firm part of Munich’s cultural program..

The festival is combined with an agricultural show every three years, but the main attractions to the millions of visitors are the beer tents, rides, and other entertainment..

Oktoberfest typically attracts over six million visitors, each of whom consumes at least a liter of beer as well as wine and non-alcoholic beverages..

Half a million chickens and almost a hundred oxen are slaughtered and eaten, together with 110,000 lbs of fish and 400,000 of pork sausages..

The total contribution to Munich’s economy is estimated at around a billion euros..

The festival is held at a special terrain, about a 10-minute walk south of the Hauptbahnhof, known as the Theresienwiese, and Oktoberfest is therefore locally often referred to as the Wies’n..

☆ Munich and Beer - Just Flow Together ☆

The show grounds are usually open from 10 am to midnight, with drinking stopping mostly at 10:30 pm..

Beer tents close for new arrivals when full – on weekends that can be before noon!!

It is generally a good idea to leave before 10 pm both for safety reasons and to avoid the crowds on public transportation..

Finding accommodations in Munich during Oktoberfest is problematic – expect to pay top dollar for even the simplest hotel..

Oktoberfest looks like my vision of the ideal Saturday … lots of beer, lots of roasted meat and sausage and nary a leafy vegetable to be seen anywhere. The only thing missing is a big screen TV and some of my favorite friends. Oh well … with so much beer flowing I’m sure its easy to make new ones!
